Sadness filled his eyes as he stopped touching me and looked away. “So you didn’t love me when you got your wings in. We were together then.”

He didn’t really ask, but I felt I needed to answer. “Yes. I didn’t know and—apparently Hudson and Julian have seen them be white after our issues. It’s not like I make a choice, Lucca. My friggin’ wings just do whatever they want. My magic does.”

“That’s fair.”

“I’m sorry it’s upsetting you—I really am—but I’m slightly focused on tonight and not strangling you,” I said as evenly as possible. “Please explain this to me in a way that doesn’t make you a fucking moron?”

He wiped his eyes and let out a slow breath. “My younger brother—we fought. I wasn’t thinking. I’m sorry. I didn’t just disregard your warning like you’re clearly thinking.”

I backed down a bit and crossed my arms over my chest. “Do you blame me for jumping to that?”

“No, not at all, but I heard you. I did,” he promised.

“Tamsin Vale, do not just leave us behind like that again,” Darby said loudly from behind. “And come give everyone a damn show.”

I frowned at him. “I model in this all the time. What does it matter if I brought a sword or if I’m by the pool?”

“Well, I feel silly when you put it like that,” Darby admitted as he blew air through his lips. He just handed me my dress and I thanked him as I put it back on. “You can’t scare us like that.”

“I’m sorry, but if you think I had a single thought in my head, I didn’t. I reacted. I was here in less than a minute. I’m sorry you’re upset, but we both know I will always do that.”

“Yeah, I know,” he sighed as he hugged me.

“So Darby sees your wings like a deep purple?” Lucca blurted.

And loudly.

I swallowed loudly, seeing Hudson was there as well. “I never really asked.”

“That’s personal and not something we discuss in public. Ever,” Onas cut in, wincing when he saw the look I gave him. “I will instruct the bear on the protocol, Your Highness.”

“You better since you blurted it out in front of everyone here,” I bit out.

“So much for finishing the night in a relaxing way,” Hudson grumbled. “Let me see if I understand what happened. Lucca was an idiot—”

“Yes, but there was a huge blowup at my house, not that I ignored Tams,” Lucca cut in.

Hudson nodded but glanced around. “And you assigned extra protection on Lucca without him knowing?” He smiled when I snorted. “Of course, you did. So the Underground ignored that and went for him? Their big guys can sense fairy magic and cloaking.”

Smart dragon… Sometimes.

I shared a look with the commanders. “I think this proves that we found the new way.”

“You did, Princess, and you deserve the credit for that,” Onas admitted. “Even the ancients were clueless.”

“Because they have a set idea of what magic is. I don’t.” I shrugged as I hugged Darby’s arms to me.
